People first: Caring for the teams who bring events to life

The hidden side of a spectacular industry
By Pedro Magalhães, CEO and founder of Europalco

Audiences see the brilliance of a well-produced event: the lights, the sound, the smooth transitions, the precision. What they rarely see is the human effort required to make it happen. In the events and AV world, teams work under intense pressure. Schedules shift, builds run late, rehearsals stretch for hours, and the work does not end when the show does. As industry reports have highlighted, event professionals consistently rank among those with the highest stress levels in creative and technical fields.

This reality has always existed, but today it’s impossible to ignore. Expectations are rising, technical complexity is advancing quickly, and the pace of productions leaves little room to breathe. The conversation about well-being is not a trend; it is essential for the future of our sector.

When I’m asked about the biggest challenge facing the events sector, I rarely begin with equipment or logistics. I start with people. Not because we lack talent, on the contrary, our field is full of passionate, skilled professionals, but because the demands placed on them can be overwhelming if companies fail to acknowledge the human cost of the work.

The momentum of the industry in recent years has created a different kind of pressure. Projects follow one another with little downtime, schedules have become tighter, and clients expect fast, reliable execution. What once felt like an intense sprint now often stretches into a marathon of continuous productions.

The human reality behind every event

Before a stage comes to life, people are lifting, adjusting, testing, solving, improvising, and doing everything they can to make things work. They often arrive before sunrise and leave long after the last guest has gone home. Their work requires physical strength, mental focus, emotional balance, and a deep sense of responsibility, because in this industry, details matter and mistakes can have real consequences.

Yet most of this work remains invisible. The audience applauds the show, not the people behind it. And that is precisely why, as leaders, we must put those individuals at the center of our decisions.

At Europalco, we have always believed that caring for our teams is not only the right thing to do, it is the foundation of our long-term success. I am often asked how we maintain consistency across productions of all sizes. My answer is simple: we invest in people long before we invest in technology.

One of our most meaningful daily practices is recognizing every member of the company, no matter their role. On social media and inside the organization, we regularly highlight technicians, designers, drivers, warehouse staff, logistics teams, apprentices, and administrative colleagues. If you are part of Europalco, your work is seen and valued. Visibility builds pride, and pride elevates performance.

Recognition alone is not enough. Our teams benefit from health insurance, ongoing training, yoga and meditation sessions, sports activities, and access to concerts and cultural events. These initiatives have been part of Europalco’s identity for years. They are not perks; they are part of how we choose to operate.

One of the most comprehensive examples is our internal well-being program, Pulso, an Employee Assistance Program (EAP) designed to support our people and their families. Through Pulso, team members can access videos and articles on topics like nutrition, financial health, and mental wellness. The program also includes a number of free consultations per year with professionals in these areas, available not just to employees but also to their household members. It’s one of the ways we turn our values into daily practice.

As we look ahead, we are taking another meaningful step: Europalco is in the process of adding a Chief Happiness Officer to our team. This role will help us deepen our commitment to well-being, strengthen internal support mechanisms, and ensure that our people continue to grow in an environment designed with their needs at the center.

Creating spaces to grow and connect

Every year, we bring the entire company together for a multi-day trip to celebrate achievements and set direction for the year ahead. In 2023, for example, we traveled to Madeira for four days, sharing activities, exploring the island, and reinforcing our sense of belonging. In the past we visited Disneyland Paris and the Azores. These experiences create bonds that no meeting room could ever replicate.

We are currently preparing what will become our future headquarters, a project built around well-being and sustainability. The space will include landscaped outdoor areas, places to relax and socialize, open-air gym equipment, a cycling track, and even a small stage for internal gatherings. It follows the same intention we bring to every event: to inspire people and give them room to thrive.

I often say that technical excellence begins with human well-being. A recent industry case study supports this: organizations that prioritize employee welfare report higher motivation, lower turnover, and better overall performance. This aligns perfectly with what we experience on the ground. When people feel supported, they show up with energy, focus, and pride. They deliver their best, and in our industry that makes all the difference.

A call to the industry

This is a moment for reflection across the events sector. We all rely on skilled teams who carry on their shoulders the pressure, the long hours, and the expectations of clients and audiences alike. If we want a sustainable future for our industry, we must treat their well-being as a central priority, not an afterthought.

The people who work in events are extraordinary. They solve problems no one else sees, they adapt to challenges in real time, and they give their best even when they are tired, stressed, or under pressure. They deserve recognition, support, and an environment where they can grow and feel safe.

Our success is built on the shoulders of these professionals, and caring for them is the most important choice we make every day.

Pedro Magalhães of Europalco honoured at The Eventeers 2025 for exceptional problem-solving

Pedro Magalhães, founder and CEO of Europalco, the largest provider of solutions for events and shows in Southern Europe, has been awarded the Ingenuity Award (“Engenho” category) at The Eventeers 2025. The award ceremony took place during Reinvent the Event, Portugal’s main annual forum for meetings and events professionals, at the Centro de Congressos do Estoril.

The Engenho category celebrates professionals for whom “the impossible does not exist,” recognising those who consistently find solutions through creativity, perseverance and technical mastery.

Reflecting on the recognition, Pedro Magalhães said: “It is with great pride and satisfaction that I receive this award at Reinvent, organised by Event Point. I see it as a tribute to a 39-year journey driven by the desire to innovate, to do things differently, and to create what hasn’t yet been done.

"To innovate is to take risks – and in our sector, those risks happen live, without rehearsals. The pressure is immense. There are moments when I tell myself, ‘That’s enough, I can’t keep taking these kinds of risks'. But when it all comes together and I see everyone’s satisfaction, I forget the stress and immediately start thinking about the next challenge.

"It’s a cycle that never ends. When you love what you do, it’s impossible to stop. Still, as the years go by, I sometimes ask myself how much longer I can keep doing this—but the desire to create always speaks louder. Continuing to innovate is, and always will be, my greatest challenge.

"I thank the clients who trust us, the Europalco team who share every adventure with me, and all the other nominees—each of you is a winner.”

The Eventeers jury selected Magalhães from a strong field of professionals known for their ability to solve complex challenges in real time. Nélio Lima, Europalco’s Technical Director, and João Cardoso, Managing Partner and Business Development at New Audiovisuais, were also finalists in the Technology category, underscoring the company’s depth of expertise and commitment to innovation.

This recognition further consolidates Europalco’s position as a benchmark in the live events industry, renowned for its technical excellence, creative vision and reliability in the most demanding projects.

Europalco maps 192 tables in large-scale production for Generali Tranquilidade

Europalco, the largest provider of solutions for events and shows in Southern Europe, achieved one of its most ambitious feats to date by projection mapping 192 round tables during Generali Tranquilidade’s (one of the largest non-life insurers in the Portuguese market) annual gathering, transforming the dining setup into a synchronized visual display that set the tone for a fully immersive experience.

Held at Lisbon’s MEO Arena, the largest indoor multi-purpose stadium in Portugal, and produced by the agency 2 Inspire, this year’s edition brought together nearly 2,000 attendees for a technically ambitious event built around a central football theme.

Over 55 Europalco specialists were involved in the project, which required more than 1,700 cubic meters of equipment transported in 20 trucks, along with a month of planning and system preparation. The company’s scope of work included audio, lighting, video, rigging, staging, motor control, custom scenic, projection mapping, streaming, camera systems, and furniture.

One of the highlights of the event was the synchronized video projection mapped across 192 round tables, each 1.8 meters in diameter. To ensure projection uniformity and clarity, the surfaces were vinyl-wrapped in-house. The complex visual was achieved using 14 Christie 20K and 16 16K projectors, coordinated to create a cohesive effect throughout the dining area.

Audience entry was staged through the MEO Arena’s tunnels, culminating in a reveal moment where motorized screens lifted via movecats, opening access to the main event space. The transition was designed to mark a clear shift from arrival to experience.

Scenic execution aligned closely with the event’s football concept. The Portuguese company designed and built a custom stage featuring carpentry elements and textile prints, supported by branded visuals and lighting accents to maintain thematic consistency.

The main visual display included two 37m x 10m projection surfaces and two additional 30m x 10m screens. Video content was powered by eight Christie 30K projectors, ensuring high-resolution playback and uniform brightness across all surfaces.

The event featured the largest indoor drone light show ever performed, produced by external partner Ignition Concept. The show included 100 drones and was seamlessly integrated into a broader visual narrative that connected technology, emotion, and the brand’s identity.

The audio system utilized L-Acoustics’ L2 line array, owned and operated exclusively by Europalco, the only company in Portugal with this system, to deliver consistent, high-quality sound coverage throughout the venue. Lighting, featured Zonda 9 FX, BMFL Blade, Wildsun 500, and Ayrton Diablo fixtures, selected for their flexibility in shaping both ambient and dynamic looks throughout the show. In addition, the company delivered the entire rigging system, variable-speed motors, streaming setup, and camera configuration for both live and remote viewing.

While the scale of the event presented logistical challenges, particularly around setup, calibration, and rehearsal time, Europalco’s integrated teams ensured precise execution through pre-event testing, tight coordination, and on-site system verification.

Feedback from 2 Inspire and Generali Tranquilidade confirmed the success of the approach, highlighting the overall coherence of the event and the quality of execution across technical areas.

Pedro Magalhães, Founder and CEO of Europalco, commented, “Our focus is always on designing environments that align with the client’s message and objectives. This event combined visual storytelling with technical integration at scale, and that’s where our team excels. We’re pleased to have delivered another solid edition of this long-standing collaboration.”

ON delivers full AVL system for Portugal Pavilion at Expo 2025 Osaka

ON, an international provider of audiovisual solutions with operational hubs in Brazil and Portugal, was entrusted with the full AV integration and daily operation of the Portugal Pavilion at Expo 2025 Osaka, a standout cultural and technological space, which has already welcomed over 500,000 visitors. The Pavilion, designed by internationally acclaimed architect Kengo Kuma, explores the theme “The Ocean: The Blue Dialogue” through immersive storytelling, interactive installations, and large-scale projections.

ON was contracted by Rimond SRL, the general contractor for the project, to deliver the complete AVL infrastructure for the Portugal Pavilion — covering everything from equipment acquisition and system design to installation, integration, and daily operation throughout the six-month event. Their scope included projection systems (walls, floors, interactive surfaces, and a custom-built minidome), architectural and scenic lighting, multichannel sound systems, LED installations, touchscreen displays, and centralized control automation.

As the Pavilion is entirely driven by audiovisual content, the seamless integration and reliability of these systems were critical. A team of 8 professionals from ON worked on-site in Osaka, collaborating closely with local Japanese teams and Portuguese partners to meet tight deadlines and navigate challenges. The conceptual development and exhibition design were led by MUSE – Museums & Expos, a company specialized in curating museum and cultural projects.

The Pavilion spans 1,836 m² and combines open-air architecture with a carefully orchestrated interior flow, where audiovisual technology acts as an invisible guide, shaping atmosphere, rhythm, interaction, and emotional impact at every step. From the first moment outside to the final immersive space, the visitor journey is a seamless traversal of history, culture, sustainability, and maritime exploration—all narrated through AVL.

Inside the Pavilion, the experience begins in the Waiting Area, where a multichannel soundscape envelops visitors in the sonic atmosphere of ocean waves and winds, created by composer Diogo Alvim. This ambient audio, delivered through discreet weatherproof loudspeakers, marks the first act of a journey where AVL becomes storytelling.

The next space, known as Room 1, is a darkened environment organized around five thematic “islands,” each offering a different layer of interpretation through light, projection, image, and sound.

A highlight is the Minidome installation, featuring a hemispherical projection surface animated with navigational maps and animated cartography. To achieve this, ON commissioned a custom fisheye lens manufactured with a bespoke optical solution that allows a single Epson EB-L730U projector to cover the entire dome with uniform image quality and no visible distortion. The lens ensures image fidelity from every angle and eliminates the need for complex multi-projector setups. The result is a continuous, realistic visual experience that reinforces Portugal’s maritime legacy through innovative AV engineering.

Other islands include interactive 86” multi-touchscreen displays (Sharp PN-LA862) with content on marine biodiversity and technology; embedded Iiyama monitors designed to mimic Japanese byōbu screens; and an audio-light installation that explores linguistic parallels between Portuguese and Japanese using LED-synced words and directional sound. The system also incorporates Brightsign XD4 players to drive synchronized video playback.

Five Optoma ZK708T 4K DLP laser projectors provide ambient environmental visuals throughout Room 1. All of Room 1 is tied together by a LED ribbon integrated within the islands and a surround audio system built with Audac loudspeakers and Prolights fixtures, creating a cohesive audiovisual envelope. The technical rack includes GrandMA3 lighting controllers and Watchout 6 media servers, forming the backbone of the control system.

The journey continues into Room 2, the Pavilion’s immersive climax. Here, 16 Barco G62-W9 laser projectors, combined with a Watchout 3D-modeled content engine, create a fully enveloping animated underwater landscape across curved walls and floor. This room, with surround sound and kinetic lighting, invites the visitor to sit on the ground and absorb a sensory narrative about sustainability and the future. It is a contemplative, emotionally resonant experience that many visitors repeat. AVL here acts as both guide and narrator, seamlessly integrating visual, auditory, and spatial cues.

Beyond the exhibition, ON also equipped the restaurant, terrace, shop, and multipurpose room, providing ambient audio and versatile AV setups for concerts, film screenings, diplomatic receptions, and cultural events. The Multipurpose Room includes dual Barco projectors, Shure microphone systems, live streaming equipment, simultaneous interpretation infrastructure, Panasonic PTZ cameras, and Bose L1 Pro 16 sound systems, as well as Roland V-60 and Behringer X32 mixers, and laptops running Resolume and Vmix software for video control and real-time projection.

All audiovisual equipment was acquired brand-new in Portugal specifically for the Expo and shipped to Japan in more than 20 pallets, totaling around 4 tons. The entire system was customized and built to meet both Portuguese and Japanese technical standards.

Sustainability was a guiding principle throughout the AV system design. All lighting systems use high-efficiency LED technology, and projection relies on laser-based systems that consume significantly less energy than traditional lamps. Equipment such as Audac amplifiers and Epson and Barco projectors were selected for energy efficiency and long lifecycle, reducing waste and power demand. Modular mounts and racks were chosen for future reuse, and Japanese recycling protocols were followed for packaging and installation waste.

Throughout the project, ON had to respond to challenges well beyond AVL: adapting mounting structures, modifying scenography, handling equipment delays, and communicating across three languages and cultures. Their team remained on-site for final commissioning and continues to operate and maintain all systems daily.

The Portugal Pavilion’s AVL system is not just a support mechanism—it is the spine of the experience. Technology flows intuitively with the visitor’s path, engaging the senses and transforming the Pavilion into a fluid emotional narrative. The AVL system becomes an active agent of storytelling, guiding each phase of the visit as a symbolic navigation through culture, memory, and innovation.

“This project was not only a technical challenge, but also a defining moment for us as a company,” said Hugo Rodrigues, CEO of ON. “It validated our ability to deliver highly customized, complex AV solutions in an international environment, working hand in hand with foreign teams under demanding operational and cultural standards. We’re proud not only of what we delivered, but of how we earned trust, solved problems, and became a trusted part of a multicultural team delivering an ambitious and impactful experience.”

ON collaborated directly with Rimond SRL to ensure that the audiovisual systems not only met technical requirements but were also seamlessly integrated into Kuma’s architectural vision. The result is a cohesive, sensorial experience where technology and space are fully aligned.

Since opening, the Portugal Pavilion has been visited by more than 500,000 people, drawing praise for its immersive design and unique sensory narrative. The success of the Pavilion has already led to ON being entrusted with additional live support duties and invited to collaborate on other future international efforts. With Expo 2025 as a milestone, the company now looks ahead with confidence to new global projects, backed by proven experience in innovation, collaboration, and delivery at the highest level.

Europalco’s automated solutions enhance Renault Group convention

Europalco, the largest provider of solutions for events and shows in Southern Europe, demonstrated its vast experience in event production with the successful execution of the Renault Group Convention, hosted at the MH Atlantic Hotel in Peniche, Portugal. In close partnership with agency Prestígio for Brands, the convention brought together around 300 participants for two distinct programs, a press presentation and an internal meeting, under the unifying theme “Shaping the Future Together.”

Europalco, celebrating its 28th anniversary this year, provided a comprehensive range of production services during the event. The company delivered AV solutions, provided carefully selected furniture, executed a refined stage design, and implemented automation systems. A central feature of the production was the impressive display setup. Secondary screens complemented the main mobile screens, each a Ledwall P3,9 with dimensions of 6m by 4m, designed to enhance the viewing experience for all attendees.

The highlight of the Renault Group Convention was the stunning stage entrance. Europalco created an immersive experience by implementing LEDWall panels with automated horizontal movement that opened to reveal the speakers and, of course, the stars of the convention, the impressive Renault models. This portal of light and technology brought dynamism and surprise, capturing attention during every presentation.

The video processing and show control were managed through the Analogway Pulse 2 system, ensuring reliable performance throughout the proceedings. This technical setup supported the event's seamless execution and reinforced the company's commitment to delivering high-quality production solutions.

Another notable visual element was the integration of automated features. The event showcased horizontal movement rails and robotic lighting provided by the Ayrton Zonda 3 FX. These elements not only enhanced the visual appeal of the stage but also underlined Europalco’s continuous efforts to advance its production capabilities. This commitment is evident in the careful investment in automation technologies that set the stage for further developments in future projects.

Additionally, they managed the carpentry flooring and installed cut-pile carpeting to complete the setup. The carefully chosen furniture reinforced the event's sophisticated atmosphere. Europalco selected the DSW chairs and Totem ledwall elements for their functional design and seamless integration with the overall layout. These pieces and custom carpentry work created a balanced environment for media presentation needs and internal discussions.

Every event presents its challenges. For this convention, the cart unloading coincided with the ledwall's opening, which stood out. The team overcame this potential disruption through careful planning and on-site problem-solving, maintaining a smooth, uninterrupted schedule throughout the event. A total of 22 Europalco professionals ensured the event ran smoothly on-site. They completed the assembly in just two days, handling every detail efficiently and precisely.

Collaboration was at the heart of the project. The longstanding partnership between Europalco and agency Prestígio for Brands was evident in the stable and coordinated approach taken throughout the planning and execution phases. This close cooperation facilitated a well-organized event and set the stage for future projects that build on the trust and shared commitment between the two companies.

Pedro Magalhães, CEO of Europalco, remarked, “I want to thank Prestígio for Brands for their trust and for including us in such an outstanding show. This year, we also furthered our commitment to innovation by investing in automation, particularly by introducing new rotating stages that we will soon unveil.”

Europalco’s unparalleled execution behind the "Best of Belron 2024"

Europalco, the largest provider of solutions for events and shows in Southern Europe, recently demonstrated its expertise in large-scale event production by working for Belron, the global leader in vehicle glass repair and replacement, at the Best of Belron 2024 competition held at Lisbon’s MEO Arena. Europalco suspended 411 motors across the venue, each playing a crucial role in the dynamic audiovisual setup. These motors, spanning over three kilometers with 1,795 pieces of truss, hung 100 tons of equipment from the ceiling and illuminated the arena with 1,100 light fixtures. The dynamic audiovisual setup captivated over 1,700 attendees, featuring 48 high-resolution video projectors and 19 screens.

The Portuguese provider showcased its ability to manage complex logistics during the two-day event, which included competitions and social gatherings. After six months of thorough planning, Europalco deployed 130 professionals and 38 equipment trucks, flawlessly executing every aspect, from competition zones to gala dinners.

MEO Arena –the largest indoor venue in Portugal– entrusted Europalco to transform its space for a major event hosted by Belron. Europalco converted the arena into a multifunctional venue, accommodating competitors from over 30 countries. In a standout moment, Europalco precisely transformed 30 car competition stations into 1,300 dinner tables in just over two hours.

“Delivering an event of this magnitude required careful coordination and technical excellence,” said Pedro Magalhães, founder and CEO of Europalco. This included creating a dynamic stage that could be raised and lowered to suit the needs of different event segments. Magalhães added, “We designed the stage not just as a backdrop but as a dynamic centerpiece that transformed throughout the event. Our innovative 'flying' stage allowed us to transition seamlessly between the opening ceremony and a more relaxed lounge area. This fluid transformation was essential to creating the dynamic atmosphere the event required.”

Europalco’s success in this large-scale transformation stemmed from advanced 3D design and careful planning. Led by David Nogueira, 3D designer and project manager at Europalco, the design team used cutting-edge software like Vectorworks for technical designs and Cinema 4D for rendering. These tools provided the client with detailed, realistic visualizations, effectively addressing any concerns about equipment, technology, and execution.

David further explained, “We went through five different versions of the design before settling on the final one. Each iteration required precise adjustments based on client feedback and logistical considerations, ensuring the final design was visually stunning, practical, and achievable within the venue's constraints.”

Europalco’s technical team ensured seamless integration of the audiovisual elements by employing the powerful Christie Spyder X80 and X20 video processors to manage and switch between various video sources, providing smooth and flawless transitions. The team also used 8 x Christie Boxers 4K30, 12 x Christie HD20K, and 12 x 16K projectors to deliver vibrant, high-resolution projections across multiple event spaces.

Nineteen screens (18 in the plenary room and one in the Sala Tejo) were strategically placed throughout the venue, ensuring every attendee had clear, optimal visibility. These screens varied in size and characteristics, matching the specific needs of different zones within the event.

One of the standout technological innovations was variable-speed motors, which enabled the stage to rise after the opening ceremony, freeing up space for the competition. This logistical agility was crucial in maintaining the event's dynamic nature.

Sustainability was another pillar of Europalco's approach, with the team utilizing recyclable materials, FSC-certified wood, and energy-efficient LED lighting to reduce the event's environmental footprint. “Our commitment to sustainability was central to our strategy,” said Rita Corredoura, Europalco's systems management lead. Their eco-friendly practices extended to waste management and transport logistics, setting a high standard for environmentally conscious event production.

Energy efficiency played a critical role. The event’s heavy reliance on LED lighting helped reduce energy consumption without compromising quality. Waste management practices were also thoroughly planned, with all waste produced by Europalco's team sent to licensed waste treatment entities.

To further minimize their environmental footprint, Europalco optimized the loading of vehicles and routes for transporting equipment, using custom baskets and standardized flight cases. This approach reduced transport emissions and streamlined logistics, ensuring that production remained as efficient as possible.

Behind this awe-inspiring event was a team effort that spanned several months of planning and two days of flawless execution. The seamless coordination between Europalco's teams and MEO Arena's staff was crucial for overcoming the logistical challenges of such a large-scale production. The installation alone took 15 days, with six dedicated to set up, two for rehearsals, two for the event, and another two days for dismantling.

Vitor Cravo, Europalco's technical and project manager, emphasized the importance of collaboration: “The success of the Best of Belron 2024 event was a direct result of the teamwork between our departments and our longstanding relationship with MEO Arena. We worked closely with their team, making daily adjustments based on the client's evolving needs.”

Pedro Magalhães summarized the event's impact: “We organize numerous events yearly, but one always stands out and leaves a lasting impression. We delivered an exceptional event with The Best of Belron 2024 this year. We have set a new standard for excellence, and people will remember it for years. Agency No More organized this historic event, bringing together 800 attendees for a day of innovation, engagement, and extraordinary visual storytelling at the prestigious Sala Tejo in Lisbon.

The 2024 Sales Convention sought to celebrate and inspire the Super Bock sales team, and No More chose Europalco to bring this vision to life. The preparation for this important event took approximately two months and involved a team of 40 Europalco professionals.

During the planning phase, the team at Europalco intensively crafted every detail to meet the high standards and expectations of the Super Bock Group, which produces the best-selling Portuguese beer in the world. It was the first time Europalco had collaborated, and the aim was to create a memorable experience that would serve as a benchmark for future events.

The event’s theme, "Explorers", aimed to transport the audience through various exploration scenarios, such as mountains, oceans, and space. The main challenge was to design a screen capable of immersing the audience in these dynamic environments. The solution was an impressive 180-degree screen design that enveloped more than half of the audience, measuring approximately 60 linear meters with a projection height of 6.5 meters.

Eight Christie Boxer 4K30 projectors powered the visual experience, ensuring stunning clarity and brightness. Europalco used the Christie Spyder X80 2416 and a Pandora Box Octo 4K server for video processing and show control. One of the event highlights was the size and quality of the projection screen. The 60-meter projection screen was the central element of the stage design, providing a panoramic backdrop that changed to reflect the different exploration scenarios. This innovative use of space and technology allowed the audience to feel part of the journey as if they were climbing mountains, diving into oceans, or sailing through space.

Europalco's team designed the main stage outside the conventional format, complementing the overall theme of the exploration. Advanced lighting, sound, and camera systems equipped the stage, supporting the dynamic presentations and interactive sessions highlighting the convention. The technical set-up was solid and ensured that all presentations were delivered with the highest quality and precision.

The fully personalized entrance to the Tejo Room greeted guests from the moment they arrived. This milestone consolidates Europalco's position as a leading environmentally friendly and socially responsible event services provider.

The ISO 20121 standard, established by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), is a global framework for improving sustainable event organisation practices. Its main objective is to help organisations elevate sustainability throughout the event management process.

This certification highlights Europalco's focus on sustainability throughout its operations, which means adherence to strict criteria for sustainable event management. These standards prioritise the mitigation of environmental, social, and economic impact, as well as ensuring the safety of events. For the Portuguese provider, the certification reflects its commitment to several principles, such as a sustainable approach, brand elevation, legal compliance, operational efficiency, customer satisfaction, promotion of innovation, and risk mitigation.

Europalco's journey towards ISO 20121 certification involved a comprehensive effort to consolidate existing sustainable practices within a structured framework. Middle management played an important role in following up on objectives and actions, ensuring the seamless integration of sustainable practices into existing processes (ISO 9001:2015), and monitoring them closely.

"Our approach to achieving the ISO 20121 Certification involved a thorough review and improvement of our sustainability policies," explained Rita Corredoura, Quality Manager at Europalco. "We implemented measures to minimise our environmental footprint, promote social responsibility and optimise operational efficiency, all while maintaining the highest safety standards.”

With ISO 20121 certification, the company consolidates its position as a pioneer in sustainable event solutions, laying the foundation for a more environmentally conscious and socially responsible future. This certification demonstrates Europalco's strong commitment to sustainability while serving as a testament to its focus on providing exceptional service to clients while minimising its environmental impact.

"This is a significant achievement for our company, as it highlights our dedication to sustainability in the events industry," said Corredoura. She added, "This certification aligns with our core values and reflects our ongoing efforts to prioritise sustainability in all facets of our operations. We want Europalco to be a benchmark in the events sector, empowering people and delivering services to an unquestionable sustainability standard. By investing rigorously in quality, safety, and innovation, we aim to be an example of excellence in delivering integrated event solutions in an environmentally responsible manner. Furthermore, our undertaking extends to promoting solidarity and social support, valuing human capital, and spreading knowledge through strategic partnerships, thus reinforcing our position as a leader in sustainable event management.”

In addition to achieving ISO 20121 certification, the Portuguese company is actively engaged in initiatives to reduce its environmental impact and benefit local communities. Guided by the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), Europalco aligns its practices with global sustainability goals, identifying opportunities for growth and minimising risks. This approach fosters innovation, resilience, and a more sustainable future. Europalco promotes a circular economy by reusing event waste such as stage structures, backdrops, and ropes, turning them into new products or donating them to institutions, individuals, or even its employees. It also supports local social, educational, and cultural initiatives, demonstrating its commitment to corporate social responsibility: respect for human rights, ethics and transparency, environmental care, community participation, diversity and inclusion, and social causes involvement.

"We believe that sustainability is not just a goal, but a journey towards creating a better future for everybody," said Pedro Magalhães, CEO of Europalco. Europalco transforms Portugal’s biggest venue into a spectacular sound show

Europalco, the largest provider of solutions for events and shows in Southern Europe, once again demonstrated its ability to create unforgettable experiences with the recent transformation of Lisbon's iconic MEO Arena into a realm of sensory delight for the Generali Tranquilidade (one of the largest non-life insurers in the Portuguese market) annual meeting event. Europalco deployed the L-ISA system from L Acoustics for the first time in Portugal to create an immersive sound experience.

The event was organised by the agency Desafio Global and marked an important milestone in the rebranding of the Tranquilidade brand under Generali Tranquilidade. Europalco implemented an impressive range of audio-visual technologies, scenography and furniture, turning the MEO Arena into an immersive sanctuary for the 3,000 attendees, including employees and business partners from across the country. In collaboration with Desafio Global, the aim was to create an event where sound played a key role in captivating the audience.

Europalco has organised the Generali Tranquilidade event on several occasions; for this year's event, the Portuguese company deployed a colossal 80m x 12m main screen that was the centrepiece of the event and used 12 x Christie Boxer projectors. To manage the display and handle multiple signals, the company used a Christie Spyder X80 video processor.

Taking advantage of the most advanced audio-visual technology, Europalco deployed the L-ISA system from L Acoustics, for the first time in Portugal, to create an immersive sound experience, transforming the country's largest concert hall into a true sonic spectacle.

The immersive journey did not stop there. Europalco installed a total of 144 L-Acoustics speakers (72 Kara, 48 Kiva, 12 SB18 and 12 KS28), strategically distributed (11 front clusters, 2 ceiling clusters and 3 rear clusters) to deliver a captivating audio experience from all angles. The use of L-ISA technology enabled precise spatialisation, ensuring that attendees were fully immersed in the audio-visual spectacle.

One of the highlights of the event was the integration of LED wristbands, synchronised by radio frequency, which changed colour to reflect the transition from the old green colour to the new Tranquilidade red brand image. In addition, Europalco's innovative approach extended to the furniture, with 240 tables illuminated and controlled via the lighting desk, perfectly complementing the visual compositions.

Europalco's team of 60 professionals worked tirelessly to bring the event to life, spending two days on meticulous preparation and set-up. Plus another five days in the studio to test all connections, networks and redundancies to prepare the equipment for any failures that might occur, with AVB, MADI and analogue audio protocols. The team set up a small system to simulate what was going to be in the Meo Arena, with speakers, amplifiers and a Yamaha Rivage PM7 desk with an integrated L-ISA system; in order to detect and reduce possible errors so that the set-up would be accurate and flawless.

The implementation of the L-ISA system was undoubtedly a unique challenge for Europalco. However, through meticulous planning and rigorous testing, the team overcame this obstacle and delivered a flawless experience that exceeded the client's expectations.

The client's comments speak for themselves. Generali Tranquilidade expressed immense satisfaction, noting that the event exceeded their expectations and perfectly encapsulated the essence of the renewed brand.

Pedro Magalhães, founder and CEO of Europalco, was very pleased with the outcome: “At Europalco, we like to turn ambitious visions into impressive realities. The success of the Generali Tranquilidade event exemplifies our commitment to excellence in every detail. Seeing our team's expertise and dedication translate into a truly immersive experience for our clients and their audiences is incredibly rewarding.”

Europalco shines in the production of the "What's Next?" event

Europalco, the largest provider of solutions for events and shows in Southern Europe, showcased its expertise in creating immersive and interactive experiences at the What's Next? event organised by DREAMMEDIA, a pioneer in Portugal in the Out-of-Home (OOH) advertising sector.

What's Next?, held at the Sala Tejo of the Altice Arena, marked the 20th anniversary of DREAMMEDIA and excellence in OOH advertising. It was a visionary celebration attended by more than 800 participants and provided a glimpse into the future of outdoor advertising in Portugal and around the world.
Europalco played a crucial role in ensuring the success of the event by providing a series of services, such as audio-visuals, stage set-up, various furniture, hanging screens, and backdrops. The company deployed around 50 professionals to organise and execute the celebration to perfection.

The event aimed to “create a mini-city” and involved participants in various scenarios, showcasing the products and services offered by DREAMMEDIA. What's Next? was hosted by Catarina Furtado, one of the most charismatic and esteemed personalities on Portuguese television. The immersive experience transformed the celebration into an interactive journey through the City of the Future.

Beyond the traditional, the event offered an immersive and interactive experience with performances by renowned Portuguese artists, including a captivating concert by Pedro Abrunhosa and the Caviar Committee, and a performance by magician Mário Daniel.

Europalco deployed a main screen, a 12m x 06m LW P3.9, which delivered stunning visual effects, complemented by 85” LCD screens from DREAMMEDIA. Christie Spyder X20 1608 and PVP video server were used for video processing and show control, ensuring a smooth and captivating visual experience for the audience.
The event featured key speakers, including Tom Goddard, President of the World OOH Organization, sharing valuable insights on global sector trends.

Contributions from Daniel Redondo and Mariana Néri (Licor Beirão CEO and Marketing Manager), Paulo Faustino, Regina Santana (Artha Group), and Halisson Pontarolla, Vice-President of the Brazilian Outdoor Advertising Association, offered diverse perspectives on the future of OOH and DOOH communications.
DREAMMEDIA used the occasion to present innovative initiatives, such as the launch of Portugal’s first 100% programmatic platform, DREAMMEDIA ADS. This platform allows advertisers to create flexible and highly targeted campaigns, revolutionising the way outdoor advertising engages audiences.

The event also saw the inauguration of Lisbon Gate®, the largest digital billboard in the country, strategically located at the main entry point to Lisbon and guaranteeing more than 3.5 million monthly impressions.

Europalco worked closely with DREAMMEDIA in the planning and execution of the event. The team overcame the challenges, ensuring that the immersive experience was flawless and that the customer experience was truly memorable.

Pedro Magalhães, CEO of Europalco, said: “Our mission is to provide creative, technological, innovative, and 100% customised solutions that guarantee successful and memorable results.
