City of Culture outlines programme of events for 2013
A programme of events to mark Derry-Londonderry’s City of Culture status in 2013 has been unveiled by Culture Company 2013, the organisation tasked with promoting the year-long campaign.
The Field Day Theatre Company and the London International Festival of Theatre will feature in new performances and dates for the Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann, the biggest festival of Irish Culture anywhere in the world, have been confirmed for August 11-18, 2013.
City Mayor, Alderman Maurice Devenney said: “Derry City Council believes the programme is a vitally important tool in assisting us drive the economic and social development of Derry~Londonderry. It provides us with an opportunity to showcase our city to an international audience so we can tell our new story and encourage people from the city and beyond to share our aspirations for a new future. The UK City of Culture title offers all of our citizens a chance to promote our unique history, talents and creativity and to reap the benefits of our cultural diversity and be part of the many events planned during 2013.”
The city’s Government is contributing over £12 million to the occasion in a bid to promote the area as a cultural hub and City of Culture comprises three main themes to engage local communities – Portrait of a City, The Music Promise and Music City.
