Each week, we spotlight a StandOut individual who has made an extraordinary impact within the events industry. This week, we’re featuring David Gregory, site manager at Ops People.

How did you get into the events industry?

My journey into the event industry was quite unexpected. I had been searching for work after leaving a managerial role at a well-known retail company. One night, while enjoying a drink with my Dad’s friends at the pub, someone mentioned a company called Gallowglass, which specialises in setting up for events and music gigs. A casual conversation turned into a career opportunity when I got their number, reached out, and the next day, I found myself in an interview with the crew manager. To my surprise, he told me, “You start tomorrow at the Royal Albert Hall for a 12-hour shift!” From that moment on, I was hooked.

What is it about your job that you love doing?

What I absolutely love is the thrill of arriving at a venue and gathering my team for a toolbox talk. There is something electric about it! Once the work begins, it’s non-stop action – loading trucks, unloading gear, and just having an incredible time with my colleagues. It’s all about showing the client our skills. Seeing their faces light up and hearing their congratulations at the end of a job really makes it all worthwhile.

What’s been the stand out moment of your career so far?

Without a doubt, it was working at London 2012. Gallowglass landed one of the biggest contracts for the event, and I had the profound honour of contributing to both the opening and closing ceremonies. Imagine being part of a celebration that captivated millions! It was a gruelling ten months of long hours, but rubbing shoulders with creative legends like Danny Boyle was mind-blowing. That experience was a pivotal moment in my career!

What’s been your biggest achievement? Equally, what have you done that you can now look back on and be super proud of due to its challenges?

My biggest achievement must be working at the F1 event at Silverstone this summer. I was still working at Winter Wonderland when I received the call from Ops People that I got the job. As a relatively new site manager, this was the biggest opportunity I’d had! Arriving to find the site already buzzing with activity was intimidating, but my phenomenal team helped me settle in. One of our major challenges was floating an F1 supercar off a bomb arm. It involved countless meetings to figure out the rigging points and safety measures. But when the pieces came together for the big day, seeing the finished product was so gratifying

What key pieces of advice would you give to someone starting in events?

For anyone stepping into the industry, the main thing to remember is that it’s not all glitz and glamour. You are in for long hours, hard weeks, and plenty of sweat! But be genuine, respect everyone on site, and embrace your mistakes as learning opportunities. This industry always challenges you, but the end result of your hard work? That feeling is unbeatable!

What career goals do you have and where do you see yourself heading? For example, is there an event that you would love to work on but haven’t?

My career goals are all about expanding my knowledge in health and safety and site management. I’m planning to work towards getting my NEBOSH certification and taking online courses as well. As for working abroad, that’s definitely on my radar. I want to experience the unique ways different countries host live events. When it comes to specific events, I honestly don’t have just one in mind! I love every facet of this industry, whether it’s a music festival, motor event, or TV production. The excitement of the next challenge keeps my passion alive.
