Sparta, organiser of the Nykredit Copenhagen Marathon, has launched an Android app in a bid to improve the event experience for runners and spectators.

The 34th annual race will take place on May 19, 2013, on the streets of the Danish capital, and the app will allow spectactors to follow the race and their loved ones as they pound past the city’s Little Mermaid, Tivoli Gardens and harbour front.

Sparta believes that the launch of the Android app will mean even more runners and spectators will get an improved race experience.

“We believe that the app made it easier and more fun being a spectator, since they were able to plan where and when to cheer for their favourite runners and not miss out on anything. That is why we’ve developed it for Android as well,” said Dorte Vibjerg, director of Sparta.

In 2012, is estimated that more than 200,000 spectators followed the race via the iPhone app, the official website, and/or from the side of the streets.

For 2013, Sparta is encouraging citizens and other spectators to come up with ideas for entertainment, music or cheering, and the Nykredit Copenhagen Marathon 2013 will also be hosting the Danish National Marathon Championships.
