Sunderland is to host its first ever Tattoo this summer as part of celebrations to mark the Diamond Jubilee.

The event on June 30 will feature marching bands, a cadet challenge and music and dancing from the six decades of The Queen’s reign.

There will also be a pageant charting historic highlights of the last 60 years, followed by a flag-waving finale, featuring musical favourites from Last Night of the Proms.

More than 300 performers are expected to take part in the two performances of the tattoo in St Peter’s Square at the Sir Tom Cowie Campus of the University of Sunderland – a matinee dress rehearsal performance at 2.30pm and a main performance at 7.30pm.

The event has been organised as part of the Lord Lieutenant of Tyne and Wear’s Diamond Jubilee celebrations.
